Before you book a gas installer
Tank placement, pipework and appliance work depend on the property and local rules. Start by describing the job clearly and checking the professional’s authority to do that specific type of gas work.
Questions worth asking
- Will you install the tank or cylinders, pipework, appliances, or all of them?
- What qualifications, licence or registration cover this work at my address?
- Who arranges required permits, inspections or certificates?
- Does the written quote include equipment, labour, delivery access, commissioning and follow-up service?
- If the tank belongs to the supplier, which work and maintenance remain its responsibility?
Where to check local requirements
Rules vary within countries. These official starting points help you check the right authority before booking:
- United States: The Propane Education & Research Council advises using a qualified professional for propane installations and service. Ask your state or local authority which credentials and permits apply.
- Canada: Requirements vary by province. Technical Safety BC offers a contractor licence lookup for British Columbia; TSSA explains credential checks in Ontario. Use your province’s regulator elsewhere.
- United Kingdom: The Health and Safety Executive directs consumers to Gas Safe registration for gas work. Confirm the engineer is qualified for the appliance and LPG work needed.
- Australia: Rules and registers differ by state or territory. Energy Safe Victoria explains how to check a gasfitter in Victoria; use the relevant authority where you live.
- New Zealand: WorkSafe New Zealand says gasfitting should be done by a currently licensed gasfitter and describes the certificates to expect.
This guide is a starting point, not a statement of every legal requirement. Check the current rules for your address and job with the regulator and installer.
Finding suppliers
Some gas suppliers can arrange installation or refer you to an appropriately qualified professional. Ask about the exact service they provide, then verify credentials independently before work begins.
